Choosing Domain Names - By Ian Hagerty

adminSearch Engines Optimizations

So you want to pick a great domain name, easy right? Well no actually, it isn’t as easy as you think. Sure you can pick a name that sounds good and isn’t already taken, but are all the internet users going to know the name of your site? The simple answer is no, at least not unless you are about to launch a global TV advertising campaign.

The cold hard truth is that just because a domain name sounds good, even if it’s attached to your fantastic site, it will probably never even be discovered and all of your hard work will be in vain.

So what do you do?

You must give the people what they want! Give them a name they already know, a name they are already searching for!

No, i don’t mean you try to buy eBay from Mr Omidyar, what you must do is use the name people are looking for every day, the name that is specific to your site, the name that if typed into a search engine would bring them to exactly the place they have been searching for.

You see every day, people all over the planet are searching for different things on the internet, and rather than trying to advertise your new, great sounding site name to them, just use what they are searching for the most.

If your site sold fish food and someone wants to buy fish food, do you think they will type “Aquamayhem.com” into their browser, no, they type fish food, so wouldn’t it make sense to have the domain name “fishfood.com”.

And no, you do not need to guess what the masses are thinking, as there are many free tools available on the web for you to research these top searched keywords.

The google keyword tool is probably the best at the time of writing this article and it provides a valuable insight as to what everybody is searching for, you never know, you might even see a few new ideas for different websites while you’re researching your ideal domain name.

The simple fact is that you must be market driven, let the people decide, give them what they want and you will be rewarded.
