Department of statistics The Department of Statistics consists of among others, the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) and the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO). The CSO is responsible for the coordination of statistical activities in the country, formulation and maintenance of statistical standards, work pertaining to National Accounts Statistics, industrial statistics, economic census, and consumer price indices for urban non-manual employees. It is also responsible for three programmes launched by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation for the promotion of statistical research in the country. (1) Awards and Fellowships for Outstanding and Meritorious Research Work in Statistics (Doctoral and Post-doctoral Fellowships, (2) Awards, and Fellowships for outstanding and Meritorious Research Work in Statistics (Travel Grants), and (3) Research Collaboration with University Departments of Statistics and Research Institutions. CSO liases with international agencies such as United Nations Statistical Commission.
The NSSO conducts annual rounds of socio-economic surveys, undertakes field work for Annual Survey of Industries and follow up surveys of Economic Census, and collection of price data from rural and urban sectors. The results of annual rounds of sample surveys are published in its quarterly journal Sarvekshana.
