National Board of Higher Mathematics The National Board Of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) was formed by the Department of Atomic Energy in 1983, to foster the development of higher mathematics, to help in establishment and development of mathematical centres, to provide financial assistance for research projects, and to award scholarships for doctoral and post-doctoral studies. It has extended support to about 70 libraries in the University Departments of Mathematics to build up collections in mathematics. In 1986, NBHM introduced the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) to select candidates for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and also to identify mathematical talents at the school level itself for nurturing them. (See Annexure 3) It has selected the Mehta Research Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Physics for imparting training students drawn through the INMO. The NBHM supports an integrated three-year BSc programme in Chennai Mathematical Institute. The degree is awarded by the MP Bhoj (Open) University.
Scholarships and Fellowships: The NBHM operates a scholarship scheme for pursuing postgraduate studies (MA/MSc) in mathematics and a scheme for research award for doctoral study (PhD) in mathematics. Eligibility requirement for postgraduate studies is a good Bachelor’s degree in mathematics. The selection is made on the basis of a written test and interview to assess the aptitude of the candidates. The age limit is 22 years.
The value of the scholarship is Rs.1,200 per month tenable for two years. The research awards for doctoral studies cover four areas. Viz, Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Mathematical Physics. Eligibility requirement is a good Master’s degree in mathematics. Students possessing master’s degree in Statistics and Physics are also eligible provided they have a good background in Mathematics. Selection is made on the basis of a written test followed by interviews. The age limit is 25 years. The value of the award is Rs.5,400 per month sanctioned for one year at a time and renewable up to five years at the end of each year subject to satisfactory progress. It also conducts a Mathematics Training & Talent Search programme at three levels.
