The Union Public Service Commission conducts every year a competitive examination for recruitment of Indian Statistical Service (Grade IV). Eligibility requirement is a postgraduate degree in Statistics or Mathematical Statistics or Applied Statistics. A candidate must attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on January 1 of the year of examination. The examination is in two parts. Part I is the written examination carrying a maximum of 1000 marks: General English (100), General Studies (100) and Statistics (Three papers 200 marks each). Part II is Viva voce which carries a maximum of 200 marks. The Viva Voce is intended to supplement the written examination for testing the general and specialised knowledge and abilities of the candidates. They are expected to have taken an intelligent interest not only in their academic study but also in events which are happening around them both within and outside their own States or country as well as modern currents of thoughts and in new discoveries, which should rouse the curiosity of well-educated youth.
