The science of chemistry has a role to play in almost all the major manufacturing industries. Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry and engineering to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals. They design equipment and develop processes for large scale chemical manufacturing, plan and test methods of manufacturing the products and treating the by-products, and supervise production. Chemical engineers also work in industries other than chemical manufacturing such as electronics or photographic equipment. Because the knowledge and duties of chemical engineers cut across many fields, they apply principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and mechanical and electrical engineering in their work.
Chemical engineers design, supervise, install and handle the operation of equipment, plants and works in which materials undergo physical and chemical changes. This could cover various fields of chemical technology in mineral-based industries, petrochemical industries, synthetic fibres and even petroleum refining plants. They frequently specialize in a particular operation such as oxidation or polymerization. Others specialise in a particular area such as pollution control or the production of specific products such as automotive plastics or chlorine bleach. Chemical engineers are increasingly using computer technology to optimise all phases of production, and therefore need to understand how to apply computer skills to process analysis, computer control systems, and statistical quality.
Academic institutions related to chemical and process engineering located in India.
To join an institution the candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent.
A strong base of science and mathematics is essential. To become a
chemical engineer a graduation or a post-graduation in chemical engineering
is necessary.
The focus at the undergraduate level is on industrial chemistry, polymer
technology, polymer processing, polymer testing, polymer synthesis
etc. At the post-graduation level, special emphasis is laid on design
developments, computer aided plant design, fabrication technology,
advanced processing concepts etc.
