Hotels cater to different categories of clientele and therefore the industry offers services varying from the super deluxe category to budget category. The hotel industry includes leisure and travel industries as well as food and catering business. The industry is still evolving in our country and has a huge employment potential. In fact, supply of trained manpower in this sector is far below the demand.

Hotels have seen a rapid growth - there has been a quantum increase in only three decades, with 186 hotels (1963) moving up to 700! Apart from this, the hotel room sizes too have increased, implying that the hotels on the whole are much larger. Hotels can vary to a high degree depending on the location and the clientele - some hotels can have a major inflow of only business people or the hotels may be needed for travelers (situated alongside highways) or in pilgrimage places or tourist spots. A majority of the hotel accommodation is situated in the four metropolitan cities of India, with about 22% being handled by Delhi. All hotels are given approval by the Department of Tourism and are divided into 2 main categories :-
Organised Accommodation - hotels, resorts, motels managed by the Public Sector (the India Tourism Development Corporation chain of hotels, the State Departments of Tourism etc.) and the Private Sector (Indian-owned corporate hotel chains - who focus on specific clientele.
Supplementary Accommodation - tourist bungalows, private guest houses, forest lodges, rest houses that are usually taken care of by government departments (Public Works Department or Railways), private companies or individuals, trusts, organisations etc.
The need for trained personnel is very high - more than 20,000 people are required annually. This career has numerous benefits and is one of the most attractive options for the hard-working, creative and enthusiastic young woman or man of the present era.
Educational Qualification: Minimum qualification required to go for a course in hotel management is 10+2. For certificate, diploma and bachelors courses 10+2 is sufficient. Duration of certificate courses is six months to one year. Bachelor and diploma courses are of duration one and half to three years. Those with graduation can go for post graduate diploma courses the duration of which is one year.
