Make Money with Domain Parking - By Artem Belinskiy

My previous post about domain names, was very popular, as my statistics of visitings shows.

Another way to make money with domains is parking it with a domain parking company. Companies like Sedo offer you to park your domain for free and providing their advertisements, so when someone visits your domain, they will see advertisements placed by your sponsor. Sedo also lists your name up for sale if you want to (also free). The only thing you have to do is forward your domain name to a specific address you will get when you register with Sedo.

They provide all the ads you will display on your domain and no action on your behalf will need to be made except for forwarding your domain which is usually done at your registrar’s control panel. After setting up the domain forward the ads will be displayed automatically each time some one visits your domain.

If the visitor clicks on any of the advertisements, you will get paid a commission (which is always like five cents average per click depending on the domain’s name topic). So imagine having 10,000 visitors a day, and say 3,000 click on any ad.. You’ll get $150 just for doing nothing. Sounds great :) huh? Well.. It’s not so easy. In order to get thousands of visitors daily to your domain, you need to work hard on SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and god knows what other things.

10k visits a day is a pretty decent number of visitors for a website. The point here is, if you get a pretty damn good name registered (good keyword) you should have little or no problem at all if you park your page with someone who pays for clicks; the most difficult task will be getting some traffic to the domain.

If you really want to make money with domain parking, you should register domains related to business. I’m talking about good names though. I personally own 6 business-related domains and have them parked with Sedo. In my experience with domain parking, business and banking domains pay around $0.35 - $1.20 per click! I have worked hard optimizing these domains; obviously those kinds of clicks are worth the hard work. I get around 400-500 visits per day on each domain and the click-through rate ranges from 18% to 25%, which is NOT bad at all.

Talking in dollars and cents, that’s around $65 - $100 per day. It took me around 9 months of SEO to get this kind of traffic, but again, much of its weight stands on the quality of your domain name.

How To Make Real Income With Typo Generic Domain Names - By Henry O. Omenogor

A sure Strategy in Making Money with domain

If you are picking domain name that you want to monetize by parking or selling, one sure strategy is to pick a domain that is typo-generic in quality. Better stated, one sure way of doing this is to register a domain name that has a “type in traffic” quality. Your ability to research a domain name that has a typo-generic quality before registering will give you immediate traffic which invariably converts into cash when you park it with parking sites for pay per click cash or for sale.

A typo traffic domain is a domain that visitors will type straight on the address bar of an internet browser instead of searching for the domain or its associated key words on search engines. For example, a domain such as beautytips.com can be typed on the address bar instead of being searched for on google search engine as it is a typo-generic domain.

A type in “traffic domain” will surely convert into cash easily because it attracts high rate of conversion since prospective visitors already have in mind what they want when they visit the internet and so they they type the domain name on the address bar.

The established fact is that domain parking companies pay more on type in traffic as this is natural traffic than referred traffic. Also, some parking companies do not allow referred traffic and so registering type-in traffic will give you a sure way to earn from such parking companies.

In the same vein, prospective buyers of domain takes keen interest in acquiring typo-generic domain names since they are very particular in buying domains for the purpose of immediate traffic too.

Therefore, you will do well in researching different niche and registering generic domains in each niche as this will surely yield income for you fast.

Choosing Domain Names - By Ian Hagerty

So you want to pick a great domain name, easy right? Well no actually, it isn’t as easy as you think. Sure you can pick a name that sounds good and isn’t already taken, but are all the internet users going to know the name of your site? The simple answer is no, at least not unless you are about to launch a global TV advertising campaign.

The cold hard truth is that just because a domain name sounds good, even if it’s attached to your fantastic site, it will probably never even be discovered and all of your hard work will be in vain.

So what do you do?

You must give the people what they want! Give them a name they already know, a name they are already searching for!

No, i don’t mean you try to buy eBay from Mr Omidyar, what you must do is use the name people are looking for every day, the name that is specific to your site, the name that if typed into a search engine would bring them to exactly the place they have been searching for.

You see every day, people all over the planet are searching for different things on the internet, and rather than trying to advertise your new, great sounding site name to them, just use what they are searching for the most.

If your site sold fish food and someone wants to buy fish food, do you think they will type “Aquamayhem.com” into their browser, no, they type fish food, so wouldn’t it make sense to have the domain name “fishfood.com”.

And no, you do not need to guess what the masses are thinking, as there are many free tools available on the web for you to research these top searched keywords.

The google keyword tool is probably the best at the time of writing this article and it provides a valuable insight as to what everybody is searching for, you never know, you might even see a few new ideas for different websites while you’re researching your ideal domain name.

The simple fact is that you must be market driven, let the people decide, give them what they want and you will be rewarded.

The Domaining Revolution - Lessons From The Domain Roundtable - By Todd Mintz

“The Revolution will not be televised…you will not be able to stay home …you will not be able to plug in, turn on and cop out…the revolution will be no re-run brothers…the revolution will be live.” … Gil Scott-Heron

I (along with fellow SEO´s John Andrews, Dustin Woodard, Aaron Wall, Chuck Price & Dave Bascom) attended the 2007 Domain Roundtable in Seattle . There has been a lot written about domaining recently by SEO´s…some of it complimentary, and some of it misinformed. I find domaining to be fascinating because I view it as an online extension of old-school business that just so also happens to reasonably immune from the shifting search engine algorithms. Even more compelling, the amount of money that successful domainers earn from their investments is downright scary.

Domain Names Are Assets

The parallels between Domain Names and Conventional Real Estate run deep. A domain name can be compared to “raw developable land” (which can either lay fallow or be developed). The domain name can be either “parked” for revenue or “developed” into a business.

Domain Parking

To park a domain, a domain owner forwards the Domain DNS to a parking company. He/she than tells the parking company what type of ads to show on the page (by category, by keyword or both). The domain owner can then “optimize” the parked page by choosing a user-friendly page design and advertising content for the page for ads that both map best to the topic of the website URL and also offers the domain owner the best EPC.

Typically, parked domains get visitors and earn revenue from “type-in traffic”, where a web-surfer types the search terms into the browser without spaces (followed by a .com or other extension). However, if the parked website has previous link popularity, it might also get traffic from people following those links.

Site Development

A domain owner might also do a cost-benefit analysis and decide to “develop” the domain name through site creation. Most domainers lack some if not all the skills for site development, so a true domainer will only do development with the strongest generic brands due to the cost involved.

The level of site development might somewhat depend on the intent of the domainer. Is he/she planning to hold the domain for the long-term or planning to sell? Either way, a developed site is all about “profit and loss”…that´s how a domainer evaluates the performance of his/her investment.

Some take site development one step further. For example, Mike “Zappy” Zapolin will, for some of his super-premium domains, form a corporation, hire a CEO, and build out a major business presence revolving around his generic name purchase.

Have you noticed on business shows recently that many of the interviewees are from “generickeyword.com”? Behind that business is likely a domainer trying to get maximum ROI from his/her premium domain investment.

Domain Values

Hopefully, most SEO´s now know that the intrinsic value of a domain name can far exceed the slight search engine benefit accrued from having the targeted keyword present in it. Each generic keyword dot com domain is unique and can have only one owner. Each will also control a consistent level of type-in traffic. Formerly, many domain owners believed domain value to be 5 to 10 times its yearly PPC revenue…however, this rule of thumb has been mostly discredited. A domain is worth what a willing buyer will pay for it and domain appraisal seems to be an inexact science.

The desire of many businesses to brand themselves with a generic dot com domain combined with the incredible scarcity of quality premium names is driving the value of them sky high…

…and yet, there is plenty of room for newbies to make money in the marketplace. Learn the ground rules, be perceptive, take a 5 year nap, and you might be able to cash out quite handsomely.

What´s A Domainer Conference Like?

Low-key. Mellow. Relaxed. Welcoming. The business and social acumen of everyone I met was extremely high. There aren´t any Jason Calcanises in the domaining world…everybody I spoke to was very interested in SEO and how it could help domainers earn more from their investments. Also, I could not possibly imagine a group of people who were friendlier to newbies and would answer the type of questions that would have gotten me the brush-off at an SEO conference. Even when I obviously approached booths just to pick up the goodies (thanks for the t-shirt Michelle), people would still offer themselves as resources to help a domain newbie learn the industry.

Also, having been to SEO conferences, it was hard to fathom that the stars of the industry seemed so “normal”. Just from observing Frank Schilling at the conference (his keynote was extraordinary…please watch or listen to it), I would never be able to guess how incredibly successful and influential he is. Even more surprising is the level of respect and deference that attendees gave the top domainers. Sure, people chatted with them but they didn´t attract mad throngs of people looking to network or for tidbits of advice. They were allowed to orchestrate their own maneuverings during the conference and conduct their business. Could Danny or Rand walk the conference floor without gathering a crowd? I don´t think so.

Conclusion #1

Domainers know that SEO´s can add value to their investment and our overall reputation in the domaining community seems to be quite good. Even Frank Schilling mentioned in his keynote that his “Fall Traffic Initiative” would likely include an SEO component. However, we need to learn their needs and talk their language. They want to hear about ROI and Profit/Loss…they don´t care about “SEO-Speak”. An SEO also needs to know that a premium domain name isn´t just the online presence of a business…it is the business. The first premium domain screwed up by an SEO firm will kill our reputation in the domaining community…let not have this happen.

Conclusion #2

The domaining industry now is like SEO back in 2000 when I started learning search. There is still plenty of opportunity to jump in, learn the ropes, and make spectacular profits. Domain name articles are hitting local newspapers, publicizing the industry and bringing conference attendees like Trader Wayne who perceive domaining as a natural extension of web entrepreneurship. Domain conferences will soon become as crowded as search conferences if not more so. SEO´s do have a built in advantage over other industry entrants if they are willing to adapt to the rules of a new game…the high levels of intuition and perception common to top search marketers will translate well to domaining.

Conclusion #3

SEO is an excellent vehicle to get to a destination, but is rarely a destination unto itself… don´t be afraid to leverage SEO knowledge for something bigger and better.

Capitalize on The Growing Expired Domain Name Trend - By Richard Weber

For a while now, it has been a kind of secret kept by web marketers in the know that the profit potential of expired domain names is truly staggering

In short, expired domain names are a GOLDMINE. Better still, this is a goldmine on complete autopilot because you are able to leverage the promotional efforts of thousands of other people.

In order to get a domain name for a website or a blog you need to register it with an appropriate company called a ‘domain name registrar.’

Domain names are pretty cheap (about 8 bucks a pop or so), and there are tens of thousands registered every single day.

When you register a domain name, this is not a permanent thing. Rather, you will register a domain name for a certain period of time, anywhere from one ot ten years usually.

Most people choose to register a domain name for only one year at a time, and in this case the domain name must be constantly renewed in order for the owner to keep it. Many times, when a domain name is approaching its expiration date, the owner will simply choose not to renew it.

– How You Can Cash In On The Expired Domain Name Trend –

So that is all well and good, but WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH MAKING MONEY??

Here is where the cool part comes in:

Every year or few years, the owner of a domain name must pay a registration fee or else the domain name itself will be back in the marketplace where anybody can buy it.

There are many reasons why an owner of a domain name would not renew it, including that they simply did not realize it was going to expire, they got sidetracked with other business ventures, or they simply decided that they did not want it anymore.

Here’s the rub: Due to the previous owner’s promotion, there is still alot of traffic and visitors being directed to a domain name when it expires!

If you can redirect the traffic going to the expired domain name to your own website, you have a constant stream of new visitors coming to your site every day on autopilot.

If, as an individual or even a small business, you set out to acquire some expiring domain names for yourself, you would have a very difficult time going about this. It requires a sizeable amount of capital to be able to get into the expired domain name game an a large scale, and it is only on a large scale that you have massive success.

This is just a simple principle from Economics 101, people! ECONOMIES OF SCALE, which means the little guy doesn’t stand a chance. It’s the same reason that nobody can compete with Wal-Mart, because they have such a huge amount of working capital.

But, like the title of this section suggests, there IS a great way for the little guy to cash in on expired domain name traffic. There are several big companies out there that will buy lots of expiring domain names, and over time they come to accumulate tens of thousands of daily visitors that they can rediirect.

But instead of keeping this goldmine of traffic to themselves, they will allow anybody to submit their own website address and have some traffic redirected their way, which is very affordable and efficient for the little guy with a small budget.

This can be a great option for anybody who has a quality website but lacks a steady stream of visitors, as this is among the cheaper yet still effective of all marketing options.

–Picking A Good Company To Get Traffic From –

I will say right now up front that it IS possible to be scammed in this arena. Be on the lookout for unscrupulous companies who pander to the hopes and dreams of aspiring internet marketers, and then run away with their cash.

What is it that differentiates a legitimate company from a scam in this area? One thing is that a legitimate company will always have testimonials from customers about their service, and a scam will not.

A legit company will also be very upfront about what their entire operation is, and they will explain it in terms that even an internet newbie can understand. A scam company will take the approach of providing little quality information, perpetuating the illusion that they know alot about this industry and you should just trust them on this point and hand over your credit card info.

Basically, if you have spent a decent amount of time surfing the web, you will have developed an intuitive sense of when a site ‘just doesn’t feel right.’ So if you feel any internal alarms going off, simply click off the site and make sure you don’t give them your money. Most likely there will be absolutely no return on investment.

Yahoo and Adobe open an new frontier in online advertising, ads in PDF’s!

There’s advertising everywhere, and if it isn’t we’ll soon make sure to get some ads where there are none. Someone must have looked at all those PDF’s lying around on the web and sent around in emails, and noticed that they were ad-free. Weel, no more - if you’ve ever wanted to put dynamically generated ads on PDF files posted on the Web or distributed via e-mail this is you lucky day as Yahoo and Adobe have teamed up to offer just that. “But I’ve seen ads in PDF’s” you protest, ah yes, but those were static ads, these are dynamic. Difference.
Cnn Money reckons content producers are gonna be rich. You know, like how all those blogs with adsense are totally raking it in, rich.

For publishers, it’s another way to make money on content.
Content now available as paid downloads or on a subscription basis could be opened up to a mass online audience using the Adobe-Yahoo ad service. Some publishers haven’t been taking advantage of ad opportunities for their content. That’s the case with many hobbyist and enthusiast newsletters.

Sure, if you say so. Here’s what I find just a little creepy:

Publishers pay nothing to participate. They’ll first upload their Adobe PDF content to Adobe, so the content can be ad-enabled. The content then is distributed however the publishers distribute the content, be it on Web sites, via e-mail or whatever.

It’s all a clever ruse from Adobe so that they get to read subscription content first, admit it. ;)

Isn’t it About Time for a Google Credit Card?

  a gravatar

David: I just want to say one word to you - just one word.
Google: Yes sir.
David: Are you listening?
Google: Yes I am.
David: ‘Plastic.’
Google: Exactly how do you mean?
David: There’s a great future in plastic. Think about it. Will you think about it?
Google: Yes I will.
David: Shh! Enough said. That’s a deal.

I read lots of chatter about the Google Phone (or GPhone) that is suppose to revolutionize the phone industry, and I now I am starting to hear about the Google Computer as well, which I imagine would be loaded with as many anti-Microsoft applications as possible, and of course have some sort of built in AdSense toolbar.

But here’s my free advice of the day to Google - why spend your time on these massively complex projects going up against angry and entrenched competitors (Verizon, Microsoft, Dell - I wouldn’t even want to dispute my phone bill with these companies), when there is much easier money sitting right in front of you, waiting to be grabbed. Attention Google: you need to create a Google Credit Card!

I envision a card that works something like this. First, for businesses: for every $100 you spend, you get $1 of AdWords credit. For every $100 you spend on AdWords, you get $3 AdWords credit, and if you link your credit card to your Google Checkout account, every $100 you spend via Google Checkout gets you $5 of AdWords credit.

For consumers, for every $100 you spend, you get $1 of credit toward the standard affinity card goodies (trips, MP3 players, etc) and when you link your Google Credit Card (OK, let’s be honest, it will definitely be called the “GCard”) to your Google Checkout account, that $1 turns into $5. And for consumers, here’s the additional cool draw: not only do you get a credit card that says “Google” on it in big letters (cool factor for your friends), but you can also redeem your points for awesome Google rewards, from the mundane (Google t-shirts, lava lamps) to the fantastic (10,000,000 points for a ride in the Google Plane with Larry and Sergei; 100,000,000 points and you get to design a special holiday logo on Google; 1 billion points and you get your own sub-domain on Google, like Rodnitzky.Google.com!)

Think of how much money already passes through Google via AdWords and Google Checkout. And then think about how much Google prefers to replace middlemen. And finally think about how giving businesses AdWords credit is such a round trip win-win for Google as a credit card company (i.e.: thanks for spending money with the Google credit card. Here’s some money back that you have to spend on Google.) This is a huge opportunity.

This being Google there would of course have to be some clever twist on the whole credit card industry. Perhaps they would never charge an annual fee but you had to pay your bill online (and to get to the bill pay page, you had to go through several pages of AdSense ads). Maybe like GMail, your credit limit would start low but would continually increase (”never not buy anything again”, sort of like “never delete email again”). Or like the forks at the Google cafeteria, perhaps the credit card could be made out of recycled potatoes - the first biodegradable credit card!

Most of these ideas are silly - I know - but the idea of Google Credit Card really isn’t. Now I know that some of you old-timers will remind me that Yahoo once had (still has?) a credit card that they pushed pretty heavily for a while. Indeed, in the early 2000s, I believe it was standard operating procedure for every consumer-facing online business to have a private-labeled credit card.

I have no idea what happened to the Yahoo card (or the Webvan card, eToys card, or any of the other cards that once existed). I do know that I still use my Amazon card (though only for Amazon purchases). And even if the Yahoo card failed, the Google card I describe above would be different, if only because they could link rewards to AdWords credit and because Google simply has a more powerful brand that Yahoo ever had.

So what are you waiting for Google? I know that trying to simultaneously destroy the phone, computer, newspaper, radio, and software industries is a lot of fun, but sometimes you have to take a step back and pick up the cash that’s just lying there waiting for you. One word Google: plastic.
