The iPhone revolutionized hand held computing when it first came out, spurring competitors and changing the way that people kept in touch with the world while on the go. With iPhone application development opened to third parties, there are dozens of new apps coming out every day. For busy travelers, the iPhone can be an excellent tool for managing trips and getting around in a foreign city or town. Here are some of the best iPhone apps available for savvy travelers.

Currency converter

The MoMPF Currency Converter is one of the best currency converters in the Apple App store. It costs $0.99, and lets you download and store exchange rates from 30 different countries, so you can access them wherever you are without having to incur international data roaming costs.

Checking Flight Itinerary

You never know when a flight schedule might change, or when you might have to adjust your plans. These applications help you keep track of your arrivals and departures so you can always keep control of your schedule.

Flight Status ($4.99) - This app lets you see the status of your flight and that of thousands of flights from around the world. You can search by airport, route number or flight number. Get landing times, ETAs, cancellation and delay info, baggage claim info and en route maps for U.S. flights.

Flight Update ($4.99) - This app does the same job as Flight Status, but it also lets you see plane seating charts and in-flight meal info, and you can also use it to check the details of flights scheduled months in advance.

Finding Your Way Around Town

When you’re in a new, foreign city it can be easy to get lost. The following apps help you find the places you want to go to and the best routes to get to them.

Yelp (Free) - Yelp lets you find the nearest pubs, cafés, gas stations, restaurants and other points of interest, providing you with quick-links to local businesses and online reviews to help you decide where to go.

AroundMe (Free) - Around me has a unique, user-friendly interface that organizes points of interest under comprehensive categories. Just tap on the one you want and get started. You can also create a Favorites list, for easier access in the future. The app provides you with a map and a best route there.
